Day 40: John 11:45-57

And the Plot Thickens

The witnesses to this resurrection are very much involved in the outworking of the miracle. They see and hear Jesus calling Lazarus out of his tomb. They help roll the stone away from the tomb, and they remove the cloth that has been wrapped around the body of Lazarus.  Many of the Jews…had seen things Jesus did, and believe in Him.  This was undeniably an impressive work of God, and for many, it helped them put their trust in whom Jesus said He was by seeing what He did.  But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did.  Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What shall we do? For this Man works many signs.” Then from that day on Caiaphas succeeds in influencing the Sanhedrin to make plans to kill Jesus.  This was a real-life murder plot! These men made their plans in secret because they were afraid that the people would get angry with them for plotting against Jesus.

The plot may have thickened, but the breathtaking miracle is that Christ is the regenerator of the dead, spiritually and physically.  He is able to regenerate the hearts and minds of those who are spiritually dead in their trespasses and sins. He brought the body of Lazarus back from corruption, and so He is able and willing to deliver people from their abominable sins.  His life-giving miracle of grace is as truly remarkable as His powerful and miraculous ability to resurrect.  Lazarus was just a preview of our resurrection.   Believers, we all will be raised from the dead and shine like the sun in the kingdom of our Father.  When Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life,” He was claiming to be the source of both. There is no resurrection apart from Christ, and there is no eternal life apart from Christ.   Amen!

Question:

What did Caiaphas the High Priest prophesy about why Jesus was to die?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,

I appreciate very much your sufferings for me and for the rest of humanity.
I thank you for saving me through your crushing pain, through your many wounds, through your tiredness and agony and through your Precious Blood shed.

In Jesus Name
