What does Jesus look like?

John describes Jesus character in Revelation 1:4-7, which we looked at yesterday. In vss. 12-16, John describes what Jesus looks like in his vision.  You can read it by clicking here.  It's a wild description, isn't it? How do you think John is feeling when he sees this vision? Click here to find out what he does. John reacts in shock and awe - paralyzed by the glory and overwhelming power of Jesus' presence. The vision is not a literal description of the Jesus we will see but a way to capture in writing the power, glory, and wonder of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords - what a magnificent sight!

But then this almost monstrous being reaches out to the fallen John and tells him not to be afraid. Immediately, we move from the unapproachable fiery presence of God the Son to the personal touch of the intimate Savior. Jesus looks like a friend, a brother who walks with us on the journey of life. What a huge swing - opposites of galactic proportions - the immanence and transcendence of God.

What a powerful sign of how much God loves you and me. God willingly accommodates himself to be in a form that we can handle, understand, and love. We never need to fear the presence of Jesus. Even in times of discipline, Jesus corrects us out of love not anger. Jesus disciplines us so that we will learn and repent. As you experience the marvel and awe of God's beauty and power, remember Jesus' words to John and to you, "Do not be afraid."

Grace and Peace,

Drew
