Read – Mark 15:21-16:8
Is the Spirit comfortable in our Temple?
“…but you are…members of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief Cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together, and it continues to increase, growing into a holy temple in the Lord: a sanctuary dedicated, set apart, and sacred to the presence of the Lord. In Him and in fellowship with one another you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” Eph. 2:21 Amp
It took a few months to move into our new apartment. We got all the basics in place: living room chairs, TV, dining room set, bed, etc. We were functional, but it still felt like we were living out of a suitcase. It took several weeks to unpack and put in place the things that really made it our home. We gradually unpacked pictures, collectibles, and special interior decorations that we loved. After months of unpacking and increasingly setting things in place, we finally felt like we were truly comfortable in our new home.
What was it that made it finally comfortable? They were things with memory associations of our life together and people we love. There were things that each of us made that expressed our unique identities. Those personal building blocks were what gave us joy and made it home.
We can have a basically functional church that does normal church things; but are we the temple in which the Spirit is pleased to dwell? As a church we have committed ourselves to become equipped and established, in the power of the resurrection of Jesus, to walk, work, and worship God together as one in a healthy, multi-ethnic diverse congregation like the early church in Antioch. The degree to which we pursue relationships across race, economics, and generations in fellowship as one, is the degree to which we are built into a dwelling place for God in the Spirit.
Reflection and Application: Are you friends with a very different sister or brother? Do you need to repent and rededicate yourself to making our temple a place where the Spirit is comfortable?
Prayer: Forgive me Jesus for not letting you build me onto other very different living stones. Holy Spirit, please put someone very different into my life to love as Jesus has loved me.
