Music & Worship

College Hill Presbyterian Church has a rich and varied history of music in its congregational life.  As we prepare for the 2018-19 musical season, you are invited to consider joining the following groups.

Chancel Choir

Who Are We:  The Chancel Choir is a volunteer choir made up of individuals from all walks of life.  Some members have music training in their background while others do not.  The one thing all choir members share is the love of singing with the conviction that singing in the church choir is a vital ministry.  Whether you are a trained musician or not, if you love to sing and believe this is a place where you could use your talent to serve God, consider this your personal invitation to join the Chancel Choir.

What We Do:  The Chancel Choir every Sunday morning from the Sunday after the Labor Day Holiday to the first Sunday of June with the exceptions of the Sunday after Christmas and Easter.  The choir rehearses every Thursday from 7-8:45 pm.  The choir gathers for warm-ups each Sunday morning at 8:15 AM in preparation for singing the 9 AM Worship service.

Who Leads:  The Chancel Choir is led by Michael Parker.  Michael joined the staff in the fall of 2015.  (extract from brochure)

How Do I Join:  If you know you want to join the Chancel Choir, you can join by simply showing up rehearsal on any Thursday evening.  Rehearsals f or the upcoming season begin with a Saturday morning get acquainted singing session from 9:30-11:59 AM on August 25, 2018.  Regular rehearsals begin on Thursday, August 30.  You may join the choir anytime during the choir season.

Chancel Orchestra

Who Are We:  The Chancel Orchestra is a volunteer orchestra of string, woodwind, brass, and timpani players.  The orchestra is made up of individuals from many walks of life from high school age and up.  While there is no audition necessary, participants must be experienced players.

What We Do:  In the approaching 2018-2019 music season, the Orchestra will play in the 9 AM service each fourth Sunday of the month.  The orchestra accompanies congregational singing and the choir.  The orchestra rehearses in sections on a weekly basis and then joins together for a full orchestra rehearsal on the third Saturday of each month from 10-11:59 AM.  The orchestra also rehearses in a “dress rehearsal” with the choir on the Thursday before the fourth Sunday from 8:15 to 8:45 PM.

Who Leads:  The director of the Chancel Orchestra is Michael Parker.  Michael started the orchestra during the 2015 Christmas Season.  Since then the orchestra has become a more integral part of music ministry at College Hill Presbyterian Church.  Michael is well acquainted with orchestral music.  He started his instrumental career in the 4th grade as a trombone player in his elementary school band.  He joined his junior high school orchestra in the 7th grade on the string bass.  He played two seasons with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (Charleston, WV) while in high school, going on to serve as Assistant to the Conductor of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra while in college (Anderson University, Anderson, Ind.).

Section rehearsals begin early in September; first full orchestra rehearsal is Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10-11:59 AM.

Chancel Handbell Choir

Who Are We:  The Chancel Handbell choir is a volunteer choir.  It is composed of both trained and untrained musicians.

What We Do:  The bell rehearses weekly and plays in the 9 AM Worship about once a month.  Handbell rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 pm.

Who Leads:  The Chancel Handbell Choir is led by Carl Bryant who resurrected the handbell choir in the 2017 season.  Carl leads as an experienced handbell director, having served at both Northminister Presvbyterian Church and Wyoming Presbyterian churches in Cincinnati, before returning the College Hill Presbyterian Church.

Jesus University

Who Are We:  Jesus University is a dance team ministry to girls from both within College Hill Presbyterian Church and our surrounding community.  The girls, from pre-school through high school, meet most Saturdays throughout the year for Bible instruction and worship rehearsal, performing in worship service periodically.

What We Do:  The purpose of this ministry is to develop, nurture, and build disciples for Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.  Utilizing dance as a worship genre, the girls are taught how in incorporate dance in sacred worship for the purpose of bringing praise to God.  Jesus University performs in churches as well as outside venues.  The girls are required to participate in the Bible lesson as well as be involved in community outreach.

Who Leads:  Jesus University is the work of Helen and Joseph Brooks, leaders in College Hill Presbyterian Church.  Helen works directly with the girls in their instruction and dance rehearsals.  (short bio?)  Jesus University made its debut on Christmas Eve in 2015.

How Do I Join:  The Jesus University ministry is open to all girls from pre-school to high school, whether from within the congregation or from the community.  If you are interested in this ministry, you can discuss the ministry with Joe or Helen Brooks.

Joyful Noise Youth Choir

Who Are We:  The Joyful Noise Youth Choir is open to children, both boys and girls, from ages 6-12 who wish to sing.  The choir is open to all – both members of the congregation as well as members of the community.  The Choir sings periodically in the worship services at College Hill Presbyterian Church as well as outside engagements.

What We Do:   The purpose of the Youth Choir is to develop musical training with the goal of ministering to others through music.  This is accomplished by giving the children opportunities to takes leadership in services, activities that builds Christian character, and provides a general music education for participants.

Who Leads:  Joyful Noise Youth Choir is led by a team of two members of College Hill Presbyterian Church, Rosa Brinkman and Brenda Clark.  The choir rehearses twice a month on Saturday morning and has a goal of singing in worship one time per month.

Worship Band

The worship band leads the music at our 11 am service.  We play a variety of music ranging from gospel and contemporary Christian music to classic Christian hymns performed in a new way.  If you’re interesting in singing or playing (keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, etc.) then contact Darryll Davis to set up an audition.
