Wednesday – Mark 14:32-66

Read – Mark 14:32-66

The spirit is willing, but I’m not.

Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

Watch with me and pray, lest the Tempter overpower you. (The Living Bible).

“Simon, you went to sleep on me? Can’t you stick it out with me a single hour? Stay alert, be in prayer, so you don’t enter the danger zone without even knowing it. Don’t be naive. Part of you is eager, ready for anything in God; but another part is as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire.” (The Message)

I freely admit: I am as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire. I’m not particularly proud of it. I do love to be comfortable.  I wouldn’t think twice about binge-watching a series for hours. Part of me wants to pamper myself in all of my senses.  When I am my best self, I really am eager for anything offered by God; but it is a struggle to be all that God wants me to be.

If you’ve ever had the experience of “waking up“after some hours-long experience, like a movie, you understand that you have been living in another reality for a while. I look around, blinking, and trying to reconnect with reality.

It’s as if I have been sleepwalking. It can be dangerous for people who sleepwalk; they can fall over some danger or walk out into the busy street without even being aware of it.

Jesus warns Kingdom people to watch and pray because there is a spiritual reality out there that we have trouble seeing. The Enemy is always looking for ways to snare us and overpower us. We need training by the Holy Spirit of God to help us see those trouble zones, much like a soldier is trained how to see minefields. We need to dwell in Jesus words so that the Holy Spirit can recall those to our minds. We need the mind of Christ so that we can watch and pray with Him and resist temptation.

Reflection and Application: Spend some time with Jesus’ words and let them soak into your spirit by reading them several times, allowing your mind and spirit to absorb them.

Holy Spirit, please continue the renewal of my mind today so that I may have the mind of Christ. Help me to be my best self to watch and pray with Jesus today.
