Lenten Intentions

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten Season, during which we recognize our human frailty and sinfulness and celebrate God's steadfast love in Jesus' death and resurrection. Last night many of you lit a candle as a sign of your desire to take a step in these 6 weeks to remove an obstacle or begin a new habit that will help you grow closer to the Lord. May this email be a reminder of your intention for this day. For those not able to attend the Ash Wednesday service, I invite you to spend some time with the Lord to consider taking this step. Our passages from last night were Matthew 5:1-13 and Matthew 16:24-28.
Prayerfully identify an action step that would help you more fully surrender your heart and make room for more of Jesus in your everyday life. This could be adding a Lenten practice, giving up a habit that hinders you, or adopting an intentional mindset.
Start by asking, “What occupies a place in my heart that does not welcome Jesus?” “What practice can I add or what can I remove that will help me stay focused on Him?”
A FEW STARTING SUGGESTIONS:
Use an app or set a timer to remind you to pause briefly for prayer in the middle of each day.
Choose an object you are likely to see each day and let that sighting remind you to take a moment to connect with God.
Choose a different scripture for each week of Lent that reminds you of God’s character and how He is shaping you to reflect it better. Meditate on it frequently throughout the week.
Relinquish a “right” that you have held onto tightly. This is hard - ask for God’s help with this! Ask Him to foster in you joy and thankfulness each time you say “no” to this “right” and “yes” to His Lordship.
Adopt a mindset of gratitude for God’s work in the world and in your life. Without judgment, intentionally return to it whenever you notice it has slipped.
Grace and Peace,
Drew
