During Holy Week, we walk with Jesus in real time between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. On Palm Sunday, we experience the turbulent tension just below the surface concerning Jesus. The crown celebrates while the religious and government leaders grow in distrust and disdain. As the week progresses, the disdain and distrust gain influence.
On Maundy Thursday, Jesus teaches his followers the way of sacrificial love. Even though he knows the disciples' eventual betrayal, he institutes the Lord's Supper for all of them and readily takes a step toward the cross. We will learn from Jesus and celebrate his sacrificial love as we receive communion around the table, just like the disciples did on that night.
On Good Friday, we experience the great evil and greater love exhibited on the cross. In a more contemplative service, we marinate how God could love us so.
Then Easter Sunday, Lent comes to a conclusion in the ultimate celebration of Jesus' victory over sin, death, and guilt. Jesus has defeated the evil one and made the way clear and complete to walk with God now and forever.
